1000 Minutes to Better Soccer

Improve Your Soccer - Enjoy a Party!

The 1000 minutes program is for players who work on their skills outside of games and normal practice times. You can do this alone or with a friend. If you put in 1000 minutes of practice during the season, you will get a cool tee shirt and get to attend a party. And don't forget, attending PowerSkills counts towards your 1000 minutes.

How do you do it?

  1. Join the 1000 Minutes Program. (Click the "Join" tab.)
  2. Log in and keep track of your minutes on the form. (Use the tab with your name on it.)
  3. Each time you update your practice time, your coach will get an e-mail so that your coach knows you are practicing and can log in and approve your records.
  4. The 1000 Minutes Coordinator sets up a big party and invites all the players who have logged 1000 minutes or more.

The starting date for your practice minutes is August 1st each year, and the deadline for getting in your 1000 Minutes is May 10 each year.

1000 Minutes Sounds Like a Lot

1000 minutes is a lot of practice; not everyone who starts the 1000 minutes program gets in all the time. But those who do find that they are better players as a result. Even though 1000 minutes is a lot of time, it is not impossible. If you attend PowerSkills for all four sessions in the spring and fall, you will get 16 hours of practice. That's 960 minutes, and you are almost there.

Let's say you don't attend PowerSkills at all - then what? Well, 1000 minutes is just over 33 thirty-minute sessions in your backyard. So, if you go out back twice a week and spend 30 minutes kicking the ball around, in 17 weeks you can have your 1000 minutes. The key is to get out and play. If you do that, the minutes will add up.

What Should I Practice?

Lots of parents and players are unsure what is the most useful way to spend 1000 minutes of practice. To help, AYSO has created a wonderful manual, 1000 Minutes to Better Soccer. Your humble webmaster has used this book for years to help players train, and now it is available for you to download. If you'd like a hard copy of the book, e-mail the 1000 Minutes Coordinator to request one.
